Maria has served as the Class of 1955 Executive Director since 2012.  In this role, she works with the student leaders and members of the Board of Trustees to shape and carry out the vision and mission of PBHA, acts as ambassador to the Harvard and Cambridge and Boston communities, seeks out and develops resources for PBHA, oversees the development and implementation of sound financial management practices, supervises the staff, mentors students, and oversees safety and risk management. Maria was previously PBHA’s Deputy Director for 12 years.  In that role, she worked with staff and student leaders to improve the quality and assessment systems for PBHA programming, worked to strengthen the depth of PBHA’s community partnerships, and was instrumental in developing a culture of reflection and training focused on informed, long term commitment to service.  Maria also spearheaded the PBHA STRIDE Community Service Scholars program (formerly known as Stride Rite) through which she mentored and designed the leadership development programming for 40 undergraduate students and managed up to 3 post-graduate fellowships annually.

Prior to PBHA, Maria served for five years on the staff of City Year Boston as a program and service director for the Boston site in the early years of AmeriCorps and worked with young mothers at Concilio Hispano in Chelsea. Through her work in the greater Boston area, she has been instrumental in several key community coalitions including founding the South End/ Lower Roxbury Youth Worker Alliance and Mission Hill Youth Collaborative and advising the Academy, Bromley, Egleston Safety Task force, Youth Jobs Coalition and Boston Center for Youth and Families.  Maria had additionally served on the boards for Cambridge Community Schools, Sociedad Latina, Project HIP HOP, and the Friends of the Hernandez School.

Maria received her B.A. from The College of William and Mary in Virginia and M.Ed. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education through the Risk and Prevention program.  She is a member of the 2010 cohort for Emerging Leaders at the UMass Center of Collaborative Leadership.  Maria was born in Boston, grew up in Arlington, VA and currently lives in Roxbury with her husband and two children.

Kate Johnsen began working with the greater Boston community as an undergraduate at the Phillips Brooks House Association in 1998. Upon graduation, Kate received a Stride Rite Post-Graduate Fellowship to open a youth center in Mary Ellen McCormack Housing Development. This work led her to later serve as the director of South Boston Families Advocating Neighborhood Strength – a community coalition striving to support the healthy development of youth and families in partnership with the Department of Children and Families. Kate is currently the Deputy Director at the Phillips Brooks House Association, coaching students to operate over eighty programs serving youth and families in the greater Boston area. Kate’s additional professional interests and involvement include: staff development, youth organizing, youth development, Post-Traumatic Stress Management and crisis response in communities, mentoring, and family development programming. Beyond PBHA, as the Senior Resident Tutor in Quincy House, she devotes time to support the academic and personal development of Harvard students. Most importantly, she devotes her out-of-work time to supporting the development of her own two children.

Kerry McGowan is a graduate of Boston College, where he was involved with the PULSE program, a service learning program, volunteering at group home for adolescents and serving on the PULSE council. After college, Kerry joined the Peace Corps, and taught at a high school in northeast Thailand for 2½ years. He later returned to Thailand to provide teacher training in a refugee camp for 2 years. Back in the United States, he worked with a refugee service program in Dorchester and then as a social worker for the Department of Social Services. He also taught ESL to adults for the City of Cambridge. He obtained his Master’s in Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 2002. Kerry currently provides trainings on teaching ESL, the immigration/refugee experience, and adult learning. He works with the programs of Dorchester and Chinatown, the refugee and immigrant programs, ESOL programs, elderly programs, and the prisoner education programs. He finds working with committed, thoughtful student volunteers and leaders inspirational.

Kerry is a 20+ year resident of Dorchester and serves on the Board of Directors for the Vietnamese-American Initiative for Development in Fields Corner.

Laurie supports all of PBHA’s afterschool programming and works closely with the Afterschool Programming Group Officer. She also coaches students working in Boston’s Dorchester and Roxbury neighborhoods.

As Director of Programs, Bryan supports primarily after-school, mentoring and summer programs for middle and high school students across Cambridge, the Recent Immigrant Term-time Enrichment program in Boston (RITE) and the Y2Y Homeless Shelter during the academic year. He supports the Mentoring Program Group officer and undergraduate program directors in nonprofit management, working in partnership with communities, and in supporting public service as a career path.

Previously, Bryan was a Senior Teacher-Counselor with the Work Force program of Cambridge Housing Authority, and a College advisor at East Boston High School through the national AmeriCorps program, College Advising Corps - Boston University. He is passionate about supporting teenagers through their holistic development, and in particular is passionate about supporting mentoring pedagogy, low-income and recent immigrant students and their families.

A proud graduate of Wellesley College, Louise went on to earn an A.M. and a Ph.D. in Harvard’s Department of Romance Languages and Literatures. She worked for four years at a small nonprofit promoting conservation and indigenous rights in Latin America. From there she joined the staff of PBHA, where she is the Senior Development Coordinator, which is French for Chief Cook and Bottle Washer. When not at PBH, she can be found happily teaching French language and literature at the Harvard Extension School. Though often compared to Snow White for her love of small woodland creatures, she prefers to think of herself as Saint Francis with better clothes and Jane Goodall without the English accent.

Nathan Greenberg is passionate about helping nonprofits run efficiently to best support their communities. Born and raised in Cambridge, he received a Social Impact MBA from Brandeis' Heller School for Social Policy and Management, with a concentration in Nonprofit Management. He has worked in operations, fundraising, and communications for local organizations in Greater Boston and in St. Louis, MO, including as a Nonprofit Management Fellow (NPMF) at PBHA in 2019-21. At PBHA, Nathan works to keep the train on the tracks, and to ensure that everyone can focus on the important work without getting bogged down by broken systems. When not at the Phillips Brooks House, Nathan serves on the board of Waltham Fields Community Farm, and plays cello in the Cambridge Symphony Orchestra. He lives in Somerville with his wife, Phoebe, and pitbull, Leo.

Juliet is an experienced financial administrator in the finance department at the Phillips Brooks House. With a background in nursing, Juliet was employed by the Star Markets Company, in their HR department. She went on to spend 12 years with the Town of Arlington and worked as a finance and billing administrator for the Department of Youth Services. She led the Cambridge Center for Adult Education as their business manager for 2 years before joining PBH. Juliet enjoys spending time cooking, exploring new places, and watching Boston Bruins hockey.

Michaela Rheault (she/her) is the first Finance Assistant supporting Phillips Brooks House in the Finance Department alongside Juliet Collins, Tony Sun, and Tonni Allen. Michaela is a finance professional with an MSF and MBA from UMass Lowell. She has worked in a number of financial positions as well as heavily volunteered with various non-profit organizations. Michaela enjoys cooking, crafting, and spending quality time with her daughter.

Abrianna (she/her) is PBHA's second-year Non-Profit Management Support Fellow supporting the fundraising, communication and special events activities in PBHA.

Abrianna is a 2023 graduate of Barry University with a B.S.B.A. in Management. As an undergraduate, she was a first-generation, low-income student and a two-year Chan STRIDE scholar. She was formerly the Director of Roxbury Youth Initiative (RYI) one of the many programs a part of SUP. A Boston native, she grew up being involved at PBHA and enjoys watching the organization grow. She is thrilled and honored to become a part of the fundraising team at PBHA and hopes to continue to support all SUP programs.

Lucy (she/her) is PBHA's first Program Support Fellow supporting cross-program administrative initiatives. Lucy coordinates and supports programming and events, program-related communication and student volunteer recruitment, student engagement through shared communication efforts, and logistical support for student volunteer recruiting and engagement.

Lucy is a 2022 graduate of Harvard College with a B.A. in Social Studies and Studies of Women, Gender, and Sexuality. As an undergraduate, she was a first-generation, low-income student and a three year Chan STRIDE scholar. She was formerly the Director of Student Development for Mission Hill After School Program and a Mission Hill Summer Program Senior Counselor. Lucy wrote her senior undergraduate thesis on single motherhood and community building in her home county in Michigan, inspired by her own personal background and her work with families throughout her undergraduate career through PBHA.

Kathleen is the Department Administrator at Phillips Brooks House of Harvard College. Prior to PBH, Kathleen worked as an Executive Assistant at The Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health and Ambulatory Services Administrator at Boston Children’s Hospital. She works in close conjunction with the Director of Administration and Finance on budgetary, HR and building management work, supporting all the branches of Phillips Brooks House including PBHA, Center for Public Interest Careers (CPIC), Public Service Network (PSN) and Mindich Program in Engaged Scholarship (MPES). Kathleen lives with her partner and two cats in Roslindale and enjoys acting in community theatre, singing, and gardening.
